Representing the RSFWF at the October WCGN conference in Austin were Victoria Hanlon and Gillian Gilles. The Women’s Collective Giving Network is open to philanthropic organizations with collective-giving models, membership-driven equal contributions, established grant review and democratic member-voted grantees (sounds like us, all right).

The Leadership Forum of WCGN was well attended with 90 participants and 29 organizations across the country represented.  Gillian and Victoria both really enjoyed their time at the conference and have a lot of new ideas and material to share with our members, including online links to speaker presentations (see our next newsletter)!

Post-modern artist and RSFWF member, Jean Wells Hamerslag, graciously invited a living room full of enthusiastic members to view her colorful, playfully-oversized mosaic sculptures embracing pop iconography.  Jean explained that her home was her gallery and it was true, her works were everywhere: an eight-foot tall red and gold lipstick in the corner, hot pink lips resting on a table, enormous ice cream cones, a lifesize teddy bear in a hippy vest.  One could not help but smile at the optimistic, extravaganza of color.

Jean comes from a family of artists, three generations of them.  Following her father's and grandfather's footsteps, she launched her midlife career in mosaics when the kids left home and within five years achieved worldwide acclaim with many museums seeking her work for their collections.  Thanks, Jean, we loved them!

Arms out at the shoulder with palms up, breath in and raise the sternum while looking to the sky, collapse down as you exhale bringing hands to back of the knees.  Inhale as you come up to the original position and repeat, exhaling one more time.  And again.  Stacy McCarthy, yoga master, guided more than 80 RSFWF women through the proper yoga techniques to release tension, forget about schedules (and elections) and achieve balance.  It was a very successful Annual Membership Meeting thanks to Nancy Hashim who managed a stubborn display system and our intrepid Publicity Co-chairs Gillian Gillies and Nancy Jo Cappetta.

Our own Gayle Gillies-Mize won two gold medals at the Huntsman World Senior Games last week! TWO GOLD MEDALS, PHENOMENAL!  This year the World Senior Games were held in St. George, Utah, from October 8-20th.  The Games have several divisions of competitions from archery, tennis, bicycling, shooting, softball, volleyball, road racing, race walking, and many more (checkout their website).  Gayle won gold in both the 3K and 5K divisions of race walking.  Race walking requires proper technique and judges to monitor the race (one foot on the ground at all times!).  For those of you who might want to try this next year, free clinics are offered daily during the three days of the race walking competition.  The times and records are not yet posted to the website as the Games are still on, but we are sure Gayle is right up there with the best!

Excellent meeting and program today, but where were all our members?  Victoria Hanlon opened with the business part of the meeting, followed by Christy Wilson who described the Women's Fund's relationship to the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation.  Our by-laws, IRS required documents and banking skills come from the Foundation so that we can focus on what we like to do - learn about charitable organizations and give out grants!
Kudos to Nancy Jo Cappetta and Gillian Gillies who put together an exciting program.  Jacopo Annese, Ph.D. gave a slide presentation on his development of The Brain Observatory which is focused on both research and outreach.  Under an NIH (National Institute of Health) grant, Dr. Annese and his staff are putting together a library of three dimensional MRI brain scans of healthy and diseased brains.  His interests also include individuals with special artistic skills such as painting and music and he contemplates offering generational neuroimaging genealogies.
